1. Mow

While your grass may not be growing as fast in the winter it’s still important to mow regularly. Make sure to adjust your mower height for shorter growth and don’t cut your grass too short as this can leave it open to cold weather damage.

2. Minimize Traffic

In the winter your grass is more prone to damage from heavy foot traffic. Try to avoid walking on your lawn as much as possible, especially when the ground is frozen or covered in snow. Consider creating a path to minimize damage to your grass.

3. Aerate

Aerate your lawn in the fall or early winter to improve soil compaction and allow for better air, water and nutrient penetration. This will help your grassroots stay healthy and strong through the winter.

4. Water

You may not need to water as often in the winter but keep an eye on soil moisture. If your lawn looks dry or brown give it a good soaking to keep it healthy and hydrated.

5. Clear Debris

Fallen leaves, branches and other debris can smother your grass and prevent it from getting sunlight and air. Make sure to clear your lawn of debris regularly to keep it healthy and clear of obstructions.

6. Fertilize Lightly

You don’t need to fertilize your lawn in the winter but a light application of a slow-release fertilizer in late fall will give your grass the nutrients it needs to stay healthy through the winter.

7. Protect Your Grass

If you live in an area that gets heavy snow or freezing temperatures consider protecting your grass from winter damage. This could be burlapping delicate plants or creating barriers to prevent snow and ice from piling up on your lawn.

Follow these tips and adjust your lawn care for winter; you’ll have healthy grass. Easy! Set your lawn up for success come spring and have a green lawn all year.
