Courtyard Landscaping Project on the Kings Road, Chelsea

This garden, designed by Adolfo Harrison, was a transformation of a small garden which is looked out on 2 sides from a rather sterile space to an intimate entertaining space, right in the heart of Chelsea.

Building gardens close to houses with basements is a challenge, as the foundations for the steel pergola have to be placed with great care. Painted in an Ardenbrite metal finish, the pergola has cedar timber infills and mirrors that hide an unattractive garden wall and the effective is to create a private dining and entertaining space. This space is useable year-around as it incorporates heaters and a clear roof which means the occasional inclement weather is kept at bay!

The clever use of planters to lift planting up to eye level produces soft screening to reduce the goldfish bowl effect of the glass surrounding the garden, and it also highlights the clients’ elephant art and a hanging chair that drops improbably from above.
