Whilst not everybody’s cup of tea, the Covent Garden Flower market is a functional but elegant building as far as warehouses go. Moved to its current location in 1971 and opened in 1974 it serves as the country’s foremost flower market.
However, the Gods of residential development have spoken and at the end of the year, it’s being closed and re-located, with the future intention be that it become conjoined with the fruit and vegetable market nearby.
It’ll be a sad day as the site will be lost forever to more meaningless high-rise. As anyone who has arrived bleary eyed at 3-4am in the morning and been met by the cheery traders with their fabulous displays of flowers, its an experience not to be missed. It’s been a part of my life for 20 years and still makes me smile…..
